The END Of Parks Canada?

Parks Canada Starved Of Funding

How Did We Get To This Point?

The image above is very very troubling.

It shows that successive governments since the mid-2000s have gutted Parks Canada funding. In the first round of cuts, Park managers were faced with the daunting task of where to cut. The backcountry seemed an easy target. Much easier to compare usage numbers with the front country in simple terms. But it’s not that simple.

Fortunately, this can be fixed. The fastest solution would be an increase in Federal funding. But, there are other options and alternatives available if Parks Canada would be flexible and accept some help.

Click on the images and documents below to see the progression of cuts by Jasper National Park managers, their questionable strategic reasoning regarding how they were going to “sell the cuts to staff and the public” and you will understand the frequently referenced Trail Matrix and the Caribou Program are used to reduce access vast areas of this Park. Those 2008-2010 “PR” strategy decisions continue to this day and are now policy.

Time is running out for us to save these historic and iconic backcountry experiences for our future generations. With quick action and your support, we CAN do it.
